Kelly Lake Church of God in Christ
Kelly Lake obtained its humble beginnings in 1966. Elder Willie Johnson and his wife began meeting in the late Mother Ruby Allen’s home for prayer. Within a few months the small group moved across the street on 175 Margaret Street in Fairburn, GA. The name of the church at that time was Fairburn Church of God in Christ. Deacon Frank and Bernice Robinson along with a few others were the initial members for this fledgling ministry. Eventually, Elder Johnson moved on from the miniscule work. Between the years of 1968 to 1975, several pastors came to serve the church with short lived stays. The most notable former pastor for this church was Elder Oliver J Haney who was later appointed Dean of C. H. Mason Seminary. He is presently named Bishop of Northern Georgia Jurisdiction.
In March of 1975, Elder Norman O. Harper, along with his wife, Sister Arabella S. Harper, was appointed pastor of the small congregation by the late General Board Member Bishop John D. Husband. For eight years, Elder Harper and his family diligently traveled the 42 miles one way to minister, nurture, and lead the 15 member congregation. In 1982, he heard the voice of God, and began to look for a worship center in the Decatur area. Trough the leading the Lord, God guided him to the present location at 2411 Whites Mill Road; Decatur, GA 30030.
In May of 1983, Fairburn COGIC was relocated to its present location in Decatur and was renamed Kelly Lake COGIC. Pastor Harper entered into an agreement with Saint Paul Lutheran Church on Gilson while preparing to build the new edifice 3 miles away.
In November of 1989, after six years of sharing a worship center, Kelly Lake had its own sanctuary to worship in! This edifice was dedicated by the Jurisdictional Prelate, Bishop Husband. With the powerful preaching of God’s Word and the congeniality of Pastor Harper, the membership out grew the facility within five years. Once again, the Pastor had to begin seeking God and asking for further direction. God ordained the growth of the church and required the pastor to remain the congregation on the holy ground that He had initially given to the church. In order to maintain the vision given to the pastor, the Lord uniquely orchestrated construction of a new facility onto the original edifice.
In June of 1999, the ultra-modern sanctuary was completed. With expanded seating of over 1000, cutting edge sound and video technology, a multiplicity of classrooms, along with beautiful fellowship hall, Kelly Lake is poised to be a beacon of light to the community in service and love. We invite you to come and experience a refreshing of the “Lake,” the Family Church!
